Service Projects

The MOMS Club of South SLO County performs many service projects for our local community throughout the year.  We try to aim most of our efforts toward moms and children on the Central Coast.  Because we are a 501(c) non-profit organization, any money we raise through our various fundraisers is given straight to a charity that needs it.  Below is a list of service projects we have in the works currently, as well as some of our favorites from the past.

Current Service Projects:
1) Mother To Mother Fund: This fund was started by MOMS Club after the Northridge earthquake devastated many of the MOMS Club members in Southern California.  All chapters donate into this fund every year, and money is sent out to MOMS Club members who are in dire need.  Thousands of dollars were sent from the Mother To Mother Fund straight into the hands of MOMS Club members who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Many people received their Mother To Mother Fund money BEFORE any kind of government aid was able to reach them!  Our cookbook fundraiser funds will go into the Mother To Mother Fund.  So far this fiscal year, we have raised $194.00 for the fund.

2) Project Back To School is here again in August!  Club members will be donating school supplies and backpacks to Aspiranet Foster Care and to the SAFE family resource program in Grover Beach.

3) Monthly Service Projects for 2008/2009--June:  Donated baby and maternity items to Alpha Pregnancy Services in San Luis Obispo.  July:  Random Act Of Kindness Day--do something nice for your neighbor, mail carrier, or a stranger!

4) Our annual holiday raffle is just around the corner.  If you have a business and would like to donate something for us to raffle off, please contact us through the "Contact Us" page!

Some Of Our Past Service Projects:

1) Our April '08 Garage Sale raised almost $1,500!!  We donated all of it to Aspiranet's Camp Connect California, a summer camp that reunites siblings who have been separated through the foster care system.

2) DeGroot Nursing Home: We held our annual holiday raffle in December 2007, and raised over $1,000! All funds raised from the raffle will be used to buy supplies for the DeGroot Nursing Home for terminally ill children in San Luis Obispo.  Mrs. DeGroot funds her nursing home primarily from her own pocket, and relies heavily on donations from the public and groups like ours to buy food and medical supplies for the children in her care. Club members attending our holiday party also filled a large barrel with donations of formula, baby food, and other items!

3) Monthly Service Projects For 2007/2008-- June:  Sing children's tunes at a local senior residence.  July:  BBQ to Benefit the DeGroot Nursing Home for Children. Raised over $600!  August:  using funds from our April garage sale, we donated 20 completely stuffed backpacks to local children in need.  September:  we will have a team walking in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk at Cal Poly.  October:  Sing children's tunes at a local senior residence, in Halloween costumes!  November:  Participate in the Be A Santa For A Senior program that provides local seniors with gifts during the holidays.  December:  Our annual raffle proceeds went directly to the DeGroot Nursing Home for Children in San Luis Obispo.  January:  Donated jackets, blankets, clothing, books, and other children's items to Aspira Family & Foster Care Services for children who are being placed in foster care.  February:  "Baby Shower For Charity" where all gifts of baby items and clothing were donated to Alpha Pregnancy Services.  March:  Food Drive for The Food Bank of San Luis Obispo County.  April:  Garage Sale, where all proceeds will be donated to "Camp Connect California" to send siblings who have been separated by foster care to camp to reunite.  May:  Beach Cleanup in Avila Beach.

4) Monthly Service Projects For 2006/2007:  Donated cookies to the EMT's at the local ambulance company. Song Circle subclub went to a local senior home where the kids sang for the seniors there. Donated meal gift certificates to the family of a local boy who was killed by a car in 2006.  Donated jackets to the local homeless shelter.  Made valentines for seniors and had the kids deliver them.  Cleaned up the beach in Avila Beach.  Held a food drive for the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County, and donated over 440 pounds of food.  Donated toys, activity books, and hygiene items to the children that go through the local homeless shelter.

5) Made flannel blankets and donated them to the children at Project P.R.E.E.M.I.E., a "halfway" house in Santa Maria for mothers and children trying to get their lives back together after suffering abuse and addiction.

6) Donated maternity clothes, diapers, and formula to the Alpha Pregnancy Services in San Luis Obispo.

7) Raised over $1,800 in two separate fundraisers, and donated to CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocates program in San Luis Obispo.

8) Raised over $1,000 and purchased holiday gifts and gift cards for the men, women, and children residing at the Homeless Shelter in San Luis Obispo.

9) Project Back To School--on our fifth straight year!  Raise funds and then purchase backpacks and new school supplies for children in the Five Cities/Nipomo school district who cannot afford these items at the beginning of the school year.  We donated 20 overly stuffed backpacks in 2007!  We'll be doing this project again in August 2008!!

10)  Fundraiser BBQ--raised over $600 selling tritip dinners, and donated all of the profits to the DeGroot Nursing Home for Children.
